In January 2026, the database that Q7 Trucking Business Software runs on will reach its end of life. That means no more updates or bug fixes from the developer (SAP).
Q7 needs a new database and switching out a database for enterprise level trucking software is not for the feint of heart. It’s like changing out the foundation of your home without getting dust on your neighbors.
The good news is: We’ve been working on this behind the scenes and are excited to announce that we are 100% done with development and have been in testing for months.
The “Q” in Q7 stands for Quality, which has always been at the core of what we strive to achieve. The upgrades outlined in this blog lay the groundwork for a Q7 that is stronger than ever.
If you’d like to become an early adopter of the new Q7 database, let us know!
Q7’s New Database Engine
With a new state of the art backend database, Q7 is now faster than ever. We’re seeing an average speed and performance improvement of around 80%!
It’s obvious that picking a new database was an extremely difficult choice. We had to balance the need for complexity (trucking is complex) with compatibility, stability, and price. Options are plentiful, but we wanted an established database engine that can run Q7 for the next 20 years.
We also needed a database that wasn’t going to alter the fundamental UI principles of Q7.
With all of that in mind, we landed on PostgreSQL. This database has had decades of development and its architecture fits nicely into Q7. It consistently makes it into the top 5 most used or most adopted databases each year.
Importantly, it’s FOSS. “Free” is definitely a plus but “open source” means that the code behind the database is available to all of us. That kind of freedom fits nicely into the Frontline DIY ethos.
Let’s talk about performance…
We ran several tests on a large dataset to see how much faster PostgreSQL is compared to Q7’s previous database. Here are just a few data points:
The speed boosts come with another benefit that may not be as obvious. Many on-premise trucking businesses are moving to a cloud hybrid model where parts of your network infrastructure are hosted on the cloud. With these speed boosts, you can host various parts of your network on the cloud, yet still use Q7 trucking software at normal capacity.
Q7 On The Cloud Restructuring
That brings us to our next exciting announcement. Q7 On The Cloud will now use Microsoft Remote Desktop app. Now Q7 On The Cloud users can enjoy Q7’s UI in the styling of the version of Windows they are running locally. In addition, you’ll have an easy-access dashboard of all of your Q7 related applications.
Other Exciting Things to Come
With PostgreSQL backing Q7 the development potential for Q7 expanded greatly. Not only are we looking forward to achieving some of your outstanding requests, but we’ve already begun working on or completed several other projects:
- High DPI support
- Icon overhaul
- 64bit compilation
- New Settlement program
- Q7 AI integration
- And more
Be on the lookout for more announcements in the coming weeks.
We Value Your Partnership!
Thank you for your feedback and patience throughout this year’s UI updates. Those changes helped prepare Q7’s front end for the new PostgreSQL database and made this transition possible.
We know you rely on Q7 every day, and we’re grateful for the trust you continue to place in us. Your input guides our work, and your partnership means a lot. And we mean this.
We’re excited for what’s next, and we’re glad your here with us!
